VMware Mirage Step by Step – Part 12 – Windows OS In Place Migration

Windows OS Migration

Using VMware Mirage you can migrate existing Windows 7 / Windows 8.1 endpoints to Windows 10. You can either perform in-place migration on the same devices or to replacement devices. The migration installs Windows 10 base layer on each target endpoint while preserving user profile data and settings through the Microsoft USMT. At the time of migration, existing content of the endpoint is moved to C:\Windows.Old directory, which is processed by USMT post-migration. Mirage requires certain Full Disk Encryption applications to be pre-configured before performing an OS migration.

Before proceeding make sure you have

  1. Captured Base Layer
  2. Captured Application Layer (optional)
  3. Microsoft USMT is imported
  4. Mirage Client status should be in the connected state to Mirage Server.
  5. Reboot the endpoint if any reboot is pending for the device.

In-Place Migration to Windows 10

Login to VMware Mirage Management console. Click on Windows OS Migration

You can perform In place OS migration of Windows 7 to Windows 10 in two ways.

  1. Download and Apply Base Layer in one Step. The migration process will get initiated as soon as the image gets downloaded to the endpoint.
  2. Alternatively, you can download the base layer first and apply it to selected or all CVDs at a later time.

Choose the appropriate option and click Next.

Select the CVD you want to Migrate from Windows 7 to Windows 10

Choose the appropriate option whether you want to join the machine to the domain after migration or want to keep it in Workgroup post-migration.

Select the application layer you want to assign along with the base layer.

Click Finish to start the migration process.

You can see the migration status using VMware Mirage Client on Windows 7 machine.

Restart the Windows 7 machine once restarted
